Wiośnianki "Spring Songs"
March 6th, 2025
7:30PM
Canadian Music Centre
20 St. Joseph Street
Toronto

For misfortunes and sorrows,
The songs of the forget-me-not grow,
Every now and then a new flower will spring up,
Like the cerulean eyes of angels.

Thus Teofil Lenartowicz wrote to articulate the complex braid of natural beauty, hardship and song, nestled deeply in the spirit of humanity. Even more complex is how we navigate this complexity through the eyes of children, as they encounter the dearths and bounty of life, the harshness and beauty of springtime. "Wiośnianki" (Springs Songs), a new song cycle composed by CMC Artist in Residence Tyler Versluis, is an ode to nature, misfortune, and the resilience of children.

+ "The Music That Has Always Been", a conversation with Tyler Versluis on composing "Wiośnianki" and the challenging relationship between composers and the past.
